The International Cyanide Management Institute (ICMI) announced today that Newcrest Mining Ltd.’s Gosowong Mine in Indonesia and the PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals (PT NHM) Supply Chain that transports cyanide to the Gosowong Mine have been recertified in full compliance with the International Cyanide Management Code (Cyanide Code).
The Gosowong Mine and the Gosowong Mine Supply Chain were initially certified in full compliance with the Cyanide Code in September 2011 and recertified in full compliance in 2016. As required under the Cyanide Code, the Gosowong Mine and the Gosowong Supply Chain were again audited against ICMI’s Mine Verification Protocol and Transportation Verification Protocol within three-years of their previous certifications and were found in substantial compliance with the Cyanide Code in April 2019. The Corrective Action Plans for the Gosowong Mine and for the Gosowong Mine Supply Chain were posted on the Cyanide Code website.
ICMI has received and accepted a report from an independent professional third-party auditor verifying that the Corrective Action Plans for Newcrest’s Gosowong Mine and for the PT NHM Gosowong Mine Supply Chain have been fully implemented and that each operation is in full compliance with the Cyanide Code. The auditor’s Corrective Action Plan Completion Report for the operations is available on Newcrest’s Signatory Page on the Cyanide Code web site: https://www.cyanidecode.org/signatory-company/newcrest-mining, and on PT NHM’s Transporter Signatory Page on the Cyanide Code web site: https://www.cyanidecode.org/signatory-company/pt-nusa-halmahera-minerals. The Corrective Action Plans have been removed.
The Cyanide Code is a voluntary industry program for companies involved in the production of gold and/or silver using cyanide and companies producing and transporting this cyanide. It was developed under the aegis of the United Nations Environment Programme by a multi-stakeholder Steering Committee. The Cyanide Code is intended to complement an operation’s existing obligation to comply with the applicable laws and regulations of the political jurisdictions in which the operation is located.
ICMI has been established to administer the Cyanide Code, promote its adoption, evaluate its implementation, and manage the certification process.
