The International Cyanide Management Institute (ICMI) announced today that it has accepted the application of Orla Mining Ltd. to become a signatory to the International Cyanide Management Code (Cyanide Code). The Cyanide Code is a risk-based assurance program focused on the safe and environmentally responsible management of cyanide by companies producing gold and/or silver and by companies manufacturing, warehousing, and transporting cyanide. It was developed under the aegis of the United Nations Environment Programme by a multi-stakeholder Steering Committee and is amongst the most established certification programs in the mining sector.
Orla Mining Ltd., which is based in Canada, designated its two operating mines for Cyanide Code certification: the Musselwhite Mine in Canada and the Camino Rojo Mine in Mexico. Orla acquired the Musselwhite Mine from Newmont Corporation in March 2025; the Musselwhite Mine achieved Cyanide Code certification five times, most recently in August 2024 while owned by Newmont Corporation.
By becoming a signatory, Orla Mining Ltd. commits to following the Cyanide Code’s Principles and implementing its Standards of Practice, as well as having a certification audit of the Musselwhite Mine conducted by independent third-party auditors within two years of its March 2025 acquisition, and the Camino Rojo Mine within three years of this announcement, and every three years thereafter. Operations will be certified if found in compliance with the Code and may be de-certified if ICMI determines that they no longer comply with the Cyanide Code.
The Cyanide Code is intended to complement an operation’s existing obligation to comply with the applicable laws and regulations of the political jurisdiction in which the operation is located.
ICMI has been established to administer the Cyanide Code, promote its adoption, evaluate its implementation, and manage the certification process. A detailed list of the operations covered by signatory companies’ applications, along with the full text of the Cyanide Code and its implementing and administrative documents, are available at www.cyanidecode.org.
