The Board of Directors of the International Cyanide Management Institute (ICMI) has approved a request by PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals to extend the audit deadline of the Gosowong Gold Mine in Indonesia. International Cyanide Management Code (Cyanide Code) signatory Newcrest Mining is the majority owner of PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals.
The recertification audit of the Gosowong Gold Mine commenced within the required timeframe but due to problems with the visas of members the audit team, the site inspection had to be terminated before its completion. Scheduling conflicts prevented the audit team from returning to the site and completing the site inspection prior to the three-year anniversary of the mine’s initial certification. The new deadline for completion of the Gosowong Gold Mine’s audit is January 31, 2015.
The Cyanide Code is a voluntary industry program for companies involved in the production of gold using cyanide and companies producing and transporting this cyanide. It was developed under the aegis of the United Nations Environment Programme by a multi-stakeholder Steering Committee. The Cyanide Code is intended to complement an operation’s existing obligation to comply with the applicable laws and regulations of the political jurisdictions in which the operation is located. ICMI has been established to administer the Cyanide Code, promote its adoption, evaluate its implementation, and manage the certification process.
